Eagle Man sentenced to 23 months
Anchorage, Alaska B U.S. Attorney Karen L. Loeffler announced today that a man from Eagle, Alaska, was sentenced in federal court in Anchorage for one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Raymond Spruell, 53, was sentenced today by Chief United States District Court Judge Ralph R. Beistline to 23 months in prison and 3 years of supervised release. This sentence will be served consecutive to the sentence of 24 months with 20 month suspended and 4 months to serve that Spruell received in 4TO-11-0013CR for Assault in the Third Degree, where the defendant was sentenced by the State of Alaska for an assault that occurred during the same incident as the firearm possession.
According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Kelly Cavanaugh, who prosecuted the case, on November 4, 2011, Alaska State Troopers responded to Raymond Spruell’s residence in Eagle, Alaska, to serve a search warrant that was issued due to allegations of an assault committed by the defendant on November 2, 2011. At the residence, Alaska State Troopers found a .308 caliber rifle; a .357 handgun; a Winchester, model 94, .444 Marlin caliber rifle; and another rifle called a Savage with an unknown model and serial number, as well as .357 ammunition. Mr. Spruell has a prior conviction punishable by more than one year imprisonment.
Prior to imposing a sentence, Judge Beistline informed Mr. Spruell that someone with his criminal record and alcohol problem should never be in possession of a firearm.
Mr. Spruell was prosecuted as part of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Alaska’s Rural Prosecution Initiative, a part of the Department of Justice’s commitment to improved public safety for rural Alaska and Alaskan tribal communities.
Ms. Loeffler commended the Alaska State Troopers, and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives for the investigation leading to the successful prosecution of Mr.Spruell.
